Valgray Dog of the Year
Valgray Dog of the Year
The presentation of the above award took place at the Wallingford Show at Newbury on 18 April.
Kez the Bhandit of Valgray won the Graduate trophy.
Don bought Kez home shortly after our March 2006 Show when Val Phillips was one of our judges. Val's parting words to me were “I have a lovely puppy, would just suit you” to which I replied “no thank you, not the right time yet”.
That was on the Saturday. On the following Monday while I was at work, I received a telephone call from Don saying he had a lovely little puppy in his arms. “Where are you?” was my instant response “with Val” came the reply. So Kez joined our other three dogs. She was a very difficult puppy, didn't want any human contact, but she took instantly to our middle dog, Charlie. They became best friends and remain so, whenever there is a game to play, it is those two that instigate it, particularly “catch me if you can” as they run around our house. If one goes off to make an investigation, the other closely follows. Fortunately, they usually come back together too.
She turned the corner when she was about 6 months old and suddenly decided she could trust us. And we haven't really looked back since. Kez's main joy in life is her dad (well, Don) and agility, maybe not in that order, but she doesn't do one without the other. She is a lovely working dog and is going to give Don a great deal of pleasure, and possibly a lot of frustration too. She is 100% committed to Don. I am there for a warm lap and a cuddle when she feels like it (but then I have Jet attached to my leg! so it's no big deal that I am down Kez's list).
The photograph was kindly taken by Katie Shapland, it was of those days when I forgot to bring my camera.
