2007 Team Dash Final Report by Don Nunn
The 2007 Doggie Dash Final was held at on the Thursday of Dashing Dogs at Tattenhall and proved to be yet another if only final for the Mid-Downs Flyers. There was high expectations for the team that had already won 3 qualifiers over the last 3 years despite the loss of Gem Paws Diamond Geezer handled by Cliff Sales due to a burst tendon and a big thanks to Marion Barnes and Buddy Got Wiser for stepping in to fill the ranks.
The course though straight forward in appearance at the course walking stage was generally considered to be easy for the small dogs that went first but there was some concern that the pacing of distances between the fences may be a struggle for the large dogs.
And so it proved with most of the small dog teams going clear and at the time of the Flyers run the Axstane small team led with all four clear in 79.87 seconds. There was a slight hold up before our run when one of our members went walkabout with dog therefore delaying the final by at least 5 minutes however after eventually turning up followed by much encouragement from the rest of the team to get on the start line our challenge was underway. With no large Dogs of the 7 teams clear before us a 4 clear was going to put us in the frame at the very least.
Marc Saunders and Dash did a deliberate and concrete clear followed by Mike Wyatt with Cassie in similar style, Marion with Buddy upped the tempo with her round so it was all up to the team manager with Charlie Brown to post a clear and a certain winning time or would it be yet another final that this pair has managed to plunge the team to the depths of despair. I am afraid it was of course the latter when for the first time in many months the second poll came down in a clutter to the moans of everyone watching. Worse the time for the four dogs was point 2 of second quicker than the Axstane team who took the spoils follow by Andy Browns Large team a few seconds behind and then another small team in third. There were other hard luck stories from some of the other teams but ours of course was the one to remember for us.
